Comprehensive New York Times Blog Post on Current Airport Security Issues

NYT FiveThirtyEight blog by Nate Silver discusses airport security and current public backlash.

Some excerpts:
  • short mention of false positives
  • derivation of basis for statement "My guess is that the fraction of Americans who travel by plane each year is in fact probably not more than about 1 in 3." As opposed to "Gallup poll conducted in 2008, for instance, found that just 44 percent of Americans reported having flown at least once in the past year."
  • frequent fliers — those who take 4 or more round trips per year — account for the 57 percent majority of all air travel, even though they make up just 18 percent of air travelers and something like 7 percent of the overall American population.
Unclear where frequent flyer = 4 or more round trips/year came from.

Buddhist Temples of Ancient Pagan, Burma / Myanmar

Resolution of the plain near Pagan, Burma / Myanmar is improving enough to map some of the 3,000+ Buddhist temples using Google Map Maker, OpenStreetMap, Wikimapia.

Here's a GMM partial view of the region with some of the sites mapped.  The Panoramio photos of this area are generally poorly geo-located, but here's a view.

Pierre Pichard did an 8 volume inventory of the monuments for UNESCO, which apparently aren't available online except in snippet form.  The inventory includes lat/lon of each site to 3 decimal places.  I don't know how the surveying was done.
Probably should cancel AT&T data service for iPad and just use Verizon mifi as hot spot. I'm grandfathered for both, but AT&T is a waste.

goo.gl Tips

Here's an added bonus tip from Googler Matt Cutts: if you add .qr to the end of any goo.gl-shortened URL, you get a QR code instead of the URL. For example: http://goo.gl/LFwS.qr

If you add "info/" before the short-code, you will give info of where it will send you.

For instance:
URL: goo.gl/LFwS
Preview: goo.gl/info/LFwS
Reinstalled Picasa 3.8 after deleting database and face scanning is working again
